How Much Does It Cost to See a Dermatologist in Brisbane?
The short answer: a specialist dermatologist consultation at DERM Skin Specialists starts from $395. With a valid GP referral, Medicare pays back about $88 of a new consultation. So if your fee is $395, you're out of pocket about $307. That difference is the "gap".
We're a private billing practice, so we don't bulk bill. A consultation fee applies whether or not you go ahead with treatment, because it covers your doctor's assessment. If you need a biopsy, pathology or a follow-up, we tell you beforehand if it carries a separate charge.
Medicare rebates are approximate and set by Medicare, so they can change. Ask our reception team about the current rebate for your appointment.

Medicare & referrals
Can I See a Dermatologist in Brisbane Without a Referral?
Yes. You can book Dr Mitch Robinson, Dr Emily Shao or Dr Benny Yau at our Mount Gravatt clinic directly, online or by phone, with no GP referral. A referral only changes what Medicare pays back. An initial specialist consultation is from $395. With a valid GP referral, Medicare returns about $88, so you pay about $307; without one, about $21.
- Who can refer you. Your GP, or another specialist.
- How long it lasts. GP referrals are valid for 12 months from first use. Referrals from specialists last 3 months, unless the letter says otherwise.
- Getting it to us. Your GP can send it to us, or you can bring a copy. We need it before or at your appointment for the rebate to apply.
- No referral? You're still welcome. Medicare pays a much smaller rebate, about $21.
What does Medicare cover?
- Specialist consultations with a valid referral attract a partial Medicare rebate.
- Some medical procedures, such as removing a skin cancer when it is medically needed, may attract a Medicare rebate. We tell you at your consultation if yours does.
- Cosmetic treatment has no Medicare rebate. That includes cosmetic laser, peels and skin tightening.
Private health insurance doesn't usually cover outpatient consultations or procedures done in our rooms. You get an itemised tax invoice, which you can send to your health fund. Cover varies between funds and policies, so check with yours.

CO2 laser is always performed by Dr Mitch Robinson. Dr Emily Shao and Dr Benny Yau also perform laser treatments, and Dr Mitch takes on the complex cases. Your quote covers the whole plan, not just one session.
No surprises
Payment and Your Written Quote
- When to pay. Payment is generally due on the day of your appointment.
- How to pay. We accept cash, EFTPOS and credit card.
- Medicare claims. If you're eligible for a rebate, ask our reception team how to claim it.
- Your quote. Before any treatment, your plan lists the likely number of sessions and the total cost, in writing.
- Extra costs. We tell you in advance if anything, such as pathology, a biopsy or a follow-up, is charged separately.
- Price changes. Prices are a guide and may change. The price in your written plan is the one you pay for that plan.

The cost depends on the area, the depth and whether it's combined with other treatment. Dr Mitch quotes in writing after your consultation, before you book.
Is cosmetic treatment covered by Medicare?
No. Cosmetic consultations and treatments have no Medicare rebate, and health funds usually don't cover them either.
Can I get a price before I book?
Consultation fees and nurse-led prices are listed on this page. Dermatologist-led treatment needs an assessment first, so we can give you an accurate quote.
