Who Is Nurse Hatsu?
Hatsu is a Registered Nurse (AHPRA NMW0001261010) at DERM Skin Specialists in Mount Gravatt, on Brisbane's southside. Her main focus is laser treatment.
Originally from Japan, Hatsu moved to Sydney in 2004. She completed an Advanced Diploma of Children's Services before studying nursing at Australian Catholic University. She began working as a dermal nurse in 2009, while she was still studying to become a Registered Nurse.
Since then she has worked alongside dermatologists in Sydney and Brisbane, building experience across skin health and laser treatment. In 2011 she completed her Laser Safety Officer certification through AACDS, and laser has been the centre of her work ever since: redness and blood vessels, pigmentation including birthmarks, skin rejuvenation, tattoo removal and laser hair removal.
Hatsu speaks Japanese, English and Korean. She takes time to listen and understand what each person wants from treatment, and she enjoys helping people feel comfortable in their own skin.

What Happens at Your First Appointment With Hatsu?
The short answer: your first visit is a complimentary nurse-led assessment of about 30 minutes. Hatsu looks at your skin, asks about your history and goals, and explains which laser (if any) suits you, how many sessions are likely and what it will cost, before anything is booked.
Laser needs to be matched carefully to your skin. At your assessment, Hatsu will:
- Ask about your skin type, how easily you tan or pigment, recent sun exposure and any medicines.
- Look closely at the area you want treated, whether that's pigmentation, redness, a tattoo or hair.
- Explain the likely number of sessions, the spacing between them and the recovery you can expect.
- Arrange a dermatologist review first if a spot or pigment needs a medical opinion.
- Confirm your costs in writing before you start, with prices listed on our fees page.

Can a Nurse Treat Pigmentation and Birthmarks?
Yes, many laser treatments for pigmentation, redness, tattoos and hair are nurse-led at DERMSS. Hatsu works inside a dermatologist-led clinic, so a specialist dermatologist is close by when a concern needs one.
Some brown marks are not simple sun spots. Melasma, changing moles and pigment that looks unusual need a doctor's assessment before any laser. If Hatsu sees something that needs a medical opinion, she can bring in one of our dermatologists: Dr Mitch Robinson, Dr Emily Shao or Dr Benny Yau.

Is the first appointment with Hatsu a paid consultation?
No. Your first visit is a complimentary nurse-led assessment of about 30 minutes. If you go ahead with treatment, the cost is confirmed in writing before you start.
Does Hatsu speak Japanese?
Yes. Hatsu speaks Japanese, English and Korean. Mention it when you book if you'd like your appointment in Japanese or Korean.
Will I see a doctor as well?
Only if you need one. If Hatsu sees a spot, pigment or rash that needs a medical opinion, she can arrange for you to see one of our specialist dermatologists.
Is there a Medicare rebate for laser with a nurse?
No. Nurse-led cosmetic treatments, including laser, don't attract a Medicare rebate.

How long has Hatsu worked with lasers?

Can Hatsu remove my tattoo?
Laser can fade most tattoos, and many can be removed over a course of sessions. How many sessions you need depends on the inks, colours and your skin. Hatsu will give you a realistic estimate at your assessment.
Does laser hurt?
Most people describe a snapping or flicking feeling. Cooling, and numbing cream for some treatments, help. Hatsu will explain what to expect for your treatment.
Can laser treat pigmentation on darker or olive skin?
Often, yes, but settings and timing need more care because darker skin is more likely to develop pigment after treatment. Hatsu will discuss the risks with you, and a test patch may be suggested.
