What Is a Nurse Skin Assessment?
The short answer: it's a 30-minute skin assessment with one of our Registered Nurses. We look closely at your skin, talk about what you'd like to change, and give you a written plan with the number of sessions and the total cost. It's for cosmetic concerns. It isn't a skin check and it isn't for diagnosing spots or skin conditions.
It suits you if you've been thinking about laser, a peel or LED and want to know what will actually help before you spend money. Many people arrive with a list of treatments they've seen online and leave with a shorter, clearer plan. Sometimes the honest advice is that you don't need treatment yet, or that skincare and sun protection will do most of the work.
Our nurses work in a dermatologist-led clinic. If something on your skin needs a doctor, we tell you and arrange it here rather than sending you elsewhere. We see people from Mount Gravatt and across Brisbane's southside, including Holland Park, Carindale, Mansfield and Sunnybank.

What Happens at Your 30-Minute Skin Assessment?
We listen first. What bothers you most, what you've already tried, your skincare routine, any past treatments and how your skin reacted, and your timeframe, such as an event, a holiday or the cooler months.
We look closely. Your nurse examines your skin in good light, checks your skin type and how easily you tan or mark, and, with your consent, takes clinical photos so your progress can be compared later in the same lighting.
We explain your options. What each suitable treatment does, how many sessions people usually need, the downtime, the risks for your skin type, and what it can't do. If two treatments would get you to a similar result, we'll tell you the difference in cost and downtime.
You get a written plan. The treatments in order, how far apart, your home care, and the total cost of the course, not just the first session. There's no pressure to book on the day. Take it home and think it over.

What Skin Concerns Can a Cosmetic Nurse Assess?
Bring the thing that bothers you most. Your nurse will also explain what's driving it, because two people with "brown spots" can need quite different treatment.
Tattoo removal
Your nurse looks at the size, colours and age of your tattoo and your skin type, then estimates how many sessions you're likely to need. Tattoos fade gradually over several sessions spaced weeks apart. Black ink usually responds well; some colours fade less, and we'll tell you up front if complete clearance is unlikely. Hatsu, our senior cosmetic nurse, has worked with lasers, including tattoo removal, since gaining her Laser Safety Officer certification in 2011.
Laser hair removal
Laser hair removal works on dark hair and gives a long-term reduction over a course of sessions. It doesn't work well on blonde, grey or red hair. We check your skin type and hair colour, choose settings for your skin, and give you the course cost before you start.
Nurses don't guess
When Will You Be Referred to a Dermatologist?
Our nurses assess cosmetic concerns. They don't diagnose skin cancer or skin disease, and they won't treat a spot until they're confident it's harmless. If anything needs a doctor's eyes, we tell you, explain why, and book you with one of our specialist dermatologists: Dr Mitch Robinson, Dr Emily Shao or Dr Benny Yau.
Some treatments are always done by a dermatologist. CO2 laser resurfacing is always performed by Dr Mitch. Erbium laser resurfacing, procedures for pitted or raised acne scars and treatment of more complex skin conditions are done by our dermatologists. These are priced on assessment, after a specialist consultation (from $395).
A nurse skin assessment is not a skin check. If you'd like your moles and spots checked, book a skin cancer check instead.

How Much Does a Course of Skin Treatment Cost?
Most skin concerns need a short course, not one visit, so the number that matters is the total. Your written plan lists each treatment, how many sessions, how far apart, and the total cost of the course before you start.
As a simple example, a plan of four full-face PicoSure Pro sessions would cost $2,600, not $650. If your plan combines treatments, such as LaseMD for texture and DermaV for redness, each is listed with its own sessions and price.
Honest advice, no upselling. Course prices are listed above for treatments that need several sessions, and we don't upsell on the day. If a cheaper option, or no treatment at all, makes more sense for your skin, your nurse will say so.
Medicare and private health. Cosmetic treatments aren't covered by Medicare, and most private health funds don't cover them either. You don't need a referral to book.
Safety starts at the assessment
What We Check Before Any Laser or Peel
Most problems after laser and peels come from treating the wrong skin at the wrong time. Your assessment is where we catch that.
Your skin type. Olive, Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian and darker skin is more likely to develop brown marks after heat or peels. We treat all skin types, choosing gentler settings, spreading treatment over more sessions and sometimes preparing your skin first.
Recent sun and tanning. A tan, including fake tan, raises the risk of marks. We may wait until it fades.
Your health and medicines. Some medicines and health conditions, and pregnancy or breastfeeding, change what's suitable. Tell us everything you take, including supplements and creams.
Spots and moles. We never laser a brown spot that hasn't been assessed. Anything uncertain goes to a dermatologist first.

How long does a skin assessment take?
About 30 minutes. That leaves time to talk through your goals, examine your skin and go through your written plan.
Who will I see?
A Registered Nurse from our cosmetic nursing team, which is led by senior cosmetic nurse Hatsu. Our nurses work alongside our specialist dermatologists.
Do I need a referral?
No. Book online under Cosmetic Nursing or call us. Cosmetic treatments aren't covered by Medicare, so a referral isn't needed.
Do I have to book treatment on the day?
No. You leave with a written plan and the total cost, and you can take your time to decide.
Is this the same as a skin cancer check?
No. Our nurses don't check moles or diagnose spots. For that, book a skin cancer check with a doctor.
Can nurses do laser treatments in Queensland?
Yes. Registered Nurses can perform cosmetic laser treatments, and in Queensland anyone using a cosmetic laser needs a use licence from Queensland Health. Our nurses work within treatment protocols set with our dermatologists.
Can you treat olive or darker skin?
Yes, with care. Darker skin is more prone to brown marks after laser and peels, so we choose gentler settings, spread treatment over more sessions and may prepare your skin first.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on your concern and the treatment. Your written plan gives the number of sessions, the spacing and the total cost. Tattoo removal and laser hair removal usually take the most sessions.
Does laser hurt?
Most nurse-led laser treatments feel like quick snaps of heat. Numbing cream is used for some treatments, and your nurse will tell you what to expect for yours.
Can a nurse do my CO2 laser?
No. CO2 laser resurfacing is always performed by Dr Mitch Robinson, after a specialist consultation. Erbium laser and acne scar procedures are also done by our dermatologists.
What happens if I need a dermatologist?
We'll explain why and book you with Dr Mitch Robinson, Dr Emily Shao or Dr Benny Yau here at the clinic. Specialist consultations start from $395.
How far before an event should I book?
Ideally 2 to 3 months before, as most treatments work over a course. Plan your last laser or peel at least 1 to 2 weeks before the day.
Can you help with fine lines?
Yes. We assess fine lines and overall skin quality and can recommend treatments such as laser, skin needling or XERF that aim to improve texture and firmness.
What should I bring to my appointment?
Your skincare products or photos of the labels, a list of medicines and supplements, details of past treatments, and any event dates.
